In this example I have illustrated the process for electronic data capture using SPSS’ Web surveying technology. SPSS covers the full range of multi-modal data collection methodologies from paper questionnaires and scanning through to utilising hand-held PDA’s and WAP phones. The general procedures are really the same where you can easily author your survey once and then efficiently distribute in numerous ways. As mentioned previously the survey process comprises 3 main areas; Data Capture, Analysis, and Reporting. I will go into more detail about each of these and how SPSS have developed sophisticated, yet easy –to-use solutions that assist in these specific procedures. DATA CAPTURE The process starts with the authoring of the survey. Here you create the questions and responses that you require within your survey. InterviewBuilder Part of the mrInterview Solution, Interview Builder is a web-based tool for building online surveys (mrInterview). InterviewBuilder breaks down the task of defining questions into three stages: basic, advanced and presentation. This approach enables you to draft the basic outline of your questionnaire without having to define the detailed structure and content of each question, unless, of course, you wish to do so. At the basic level, you define the question name (a default is supplied), the question text and, if appropriate, the list of responses from which choices may be made. The advanced level allows you to complete the definitions by defining, for example, response types for categorical choice lists or valid ranges for numeric questions. The presentation level currently applies only to mrInterview questionnaires and defines how the question should appear on the screen. mrTranslate The next stage could be mrTranslate for questionnaires that require translation. mrTranslate is an easy to use, windows based translation tool. All questions that need translation are displayed to the translator, all logic and routing are kept separate, ensuring this will not be corrupted. The base language i.e. English is displayed and the translator can start translating in the language window provided. This can include a wide variety of non-romanised characters such as Chinese and Greek. Any notes or comments they may have can be added and a little note symbol appears alongside the question. Questions can also be flagged for attention by the survey author. When the translator has completed the job, the file is sent back to the survey author who can then progress the Foreign Language version to the formatting stage. The translator does not have to understand anything about the authoring or formatting of the questionnaire. mrInterview mrInterview is a browser based solution for fielding and managing large or small web projects. It includes the security, access, permissions, and features you need to easily create and administer surveys, and report on data through a Web browser (InterviewReporter). Begin your survey project on the Web and work online through the entire project. You don’t need specialists to create surveys. Anyone in your organization with the proper access can create one. mrInterview was developed for capturing survey information for market research agencies and therefore this solution has many unique advantages over that of standard “static” web-page questionnaires. Capabilities such as routing (where, based upon your previous answer, the next page you will see is highly specific to an individual response), multimedia (i.e. video and sound) displays within the survey, and “pausing” (where you can stop and restart within your own survey when you have time) are but a few examples. ANALYSIS When all the responses have been collected from the survey the next main stage in the survey process is to analyse the data. In some cases an initial exploratory overview of the data is required and this can take the form of descriptive statistics. SPSS have developed a solution that allows this procedure to be undertaken with the minimum of fuss. mrTables mrTables is a flexible browser based and secure system for creating dynamic tables that you can view, interact with online, and publish to a variety of formats. mrTables gives you the ability to effortlessly create tabular reports via a graphical user interface. Using the mrTables interactive windows interface, descriptive menus and simple drag-and-drop facilities, even the most complex of tables, together with automated graphical output, can be easily constructed. REPORTING When the analysis is complete the next stage is to distribute this information to the intended information consumers. Whilst SPSS have developed comprehensive analytical tools that allow for the export of professional looking and sophisticated tables and graphs they have also considered that there should be a “real-time” reporting function as part of a Web-based survey application. InterviewReporter Part of the mrInterview Solution, Interview Reporter is a simple browser-based tabulation tool that displays dynamic results from your interviews. Users can tabulate & monitor results as they come in, or wait until the project is complete and explore the interactive results online. InterviewReporter allows you to create simple tables using variables from your interview data. The tables can be simple topline tables showing the number of respondents present in each category of a single variable, or they can be two-dimensional cross-tabulations using one or more variables on the side and top of the table. Because of SPSS’ long statistical heritage and strength in World leading Predictive Analytic applications, turning data into information has been made easy with this seamless process illustrated.

It is a powerful and fast tool for creating tables, you can nest these tables with any combination for rows or columns. As you create the table you can see the positioning of variables and how the table will look directly on the screen.
