Overview This exhibition presents eleven architectural projects on five continents that respond to localized needs in underserved communities. These innovative designs signal a renewed sense of commitment, shared by many of today’s practitioners, to the social responsibilities of architecture. Though this stance echoes socially engaged movements of the past, the architects highlighted here are not interested in grand manifestos or utopian theories. Instead, their commitment to a radical pragmatism can be seen in the projects they have realized,

These works reveal an exciting shift in the longstanding dialogue between architecture and society, in which the architect’s methods and approaches are being dramatically reevaluated. They also propose an expanded definition of sustainability that moves beyond experimentation with new materials and technologies to include such concepts as social and economic stewardship. Together, these undertakings not only offer practical solutions to known needs, but also aim to have a broader effect on the communities in which they work, using design as a tool.

Anna Heringer graduated from University of Art and Industrial Design Linz in 2004, with her diploma project "School—handmade in Bangladesh." After finishing that building project in cooperation with Eike Roswag, she planned and built DESI vocational school and HOMEmade project on rural housing in Bangladesh. Since 2008 she has been a visiting professor at University of Art and Industrial Design Linz and director of BASE habitat/project studio for building in developing countries. In 2010 she received a nomination to Honorary Professor of the UNESCO Chair “Earthen Architecture.” An important focus of her work is the training of young architects through various lectures and hands-on workshops. Eike Roswag studied architecture at Technische Universität Berlin. In 2003, together with his partners, he founded Ziegert Roswag Seiler Architekten Ingenieure, based in Berlin. As a specialist in earthen building and natural building materials, he realized several projects in both national and international contexts. Since his participation in projects in Mexico with Technische Universität Berlin, development cooperation has become an important part of his work.

Urban Think Tank ALFREDO BRILLEMBOURG Alfredo Brillembourg was born in New York in He received his Bachelor of Art and Architecture in 1984 and his Master of Science in Architectural Design in 1986 from Columbia University. In 1992, he received a second architecture degree from the Central University of Venezuela and began his independent practice in architecture. In 1993 he founded Urban-Think Tank (U-TT) in Caracas, Venezuela. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Venezuelan Architects and Engineers Association and has been a guest professor at the University José Maria Vargas, the University Simon Bolívar and the Central University of Venezuela. Starting in 2007, Brillembourg has been a guest professor at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University, where he co-founded the Sustainable Living Urban Model Laboratory (S.L.U.M. Lab) with Hubert Klumpner. He has over 20 years of experience practicing architecture and urban design.

HUBERT KLUMPNER Hubert Klumpner was born in Salzburg, Austria in He graduated in 1993 from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in the Master Class of Prof. Hans Hollein. Klumpner later worked with Enrique Miralles and Paul Rudolph before receiving a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University in He soon became a member of the German Chamber of Architects, and since 2001 he has been urbanism consultant of the International Program for Social and Cultural Development in Latin America (OAE and UNESCO). In 1998 Klumpner joined Alfredo Brillembourg as Director of Urban-Think Tank (U ‑ TT) in Caracas. Starting in 2007, Klumpner has been aguest professor at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University,where he co-founded the Sustainable Living Urban Model Laboratory (S.L.U.M. Lab).

UTT in ETH Zurich since The Chair of Architecture and Urban Design ETH specializes in the design practice of contemporary architecture and urbanism. Their research focuses on informal settlements in the global south. The members of the ETH team are specialized in conducting research and fieldwork in different urban slum areas around the globe (India, Jordan, Morocco, Venezuela, and most intensively in Brazil).

THE ELECTIVE COURSE will focus on the real city, Zürich. The existing built urban environment is to be accepted ‘as found’ (Smithson, p., a.). Students will be taught a new form of urban literacy by learning to read the city. They will be required to map existing zones of tension, conflict, social cohesion, in which everyday life unfolds re-codifying specific spots on the city. Mapping those fields in the city will built up a data basis for Zurich, based on which, students will organize urban hikes and presentations on the field. With this agenda, the course intends to support creative action in urban life and instigate a new curiosity for the role of architects and potential for architectural thinking in the urban environment. The process and products of the course will be documented in a collective guide for Zurich, compiled and shared with the public.

SPAE Sao Paulo Architecture Experiment Toward a new social responsibility in Architecture We conceive this approach as a shift in the emphasis of contemporary architecture and of the architectural education from the form-driven to the purpose-oriented.This way, we try to reduce the disconnection betweena design and its social impact. Rather than having a purely “artistic” objective, architecture thus seeks to create more efficient constructions, locally-produced, with industrial materials, assembled in a kit of parts.

It is, quite simply, an activist architecture with the potential to be a major force for positive urban change.

Beyond the exhibition

1% The 1% was initiated in 2002 by Public Architecture, a San Francisco-based firm founded by John Peterson. The program is a call to action; it asks American architects to each dedicate a minimum of one percent of his or her time—or twenty hours each year—to unpaid work for a nonproft organization. The Web site connects designers with clients, it advocates for nonprofits, and it helps to ensure the suitability and integration of the resulting collaborations. Some 820 firms and 400 nonprofit organizations are registered; around 160 projects are currently underway.

urbaninform Created by Rainer Hehl and Jörg Stollmann in 2009 in Zurich, urbaninform collects and showcases short video documentaries, or “mini docs,” that explore ideas and interventions within informal cities— settlements built with little or no professional planning. Connecting practitioners within this specialized field, urbaninform is becoming a central forum for critical discourse and debate on ways to improve life in urban settlements.

Open Architecture Network The Open Architecture Network (OAN) is a subsection of Architecture for Humanity (AFH), a nonprofit design firm founded in 1999 by Cameron Sinclair in San Francisco. The Web site links AFH chapters around the world and also connects independent design professionals with previous and potential clients. Encouraging designers, builders, and clients to share architectural documents, drawings, and plans with others, OAN aims to limit duplication in design development and to encourage improvements on existing projects. The site presents a large number of projects—over 3,100—in a range of programs and levels of completion.
