Magyar – Local Name for “Hungarian” Hungarian is unique in that it is unrelated from many of the native European languages. It is an Uralic language most closely related to some forms spoken in Siberia and Finland’s Finnic. Stemming from a group of nomads that eventually settled down (including the Huns), Hungarian formed over the 1500 years leading up to about 1000 AD when the Kingdom of Hungary was founded. Eventually once the language was to start being written down, the Latin alphabet was adopted to assist in writing the Hungarian Language. The earliest written examples of Hungarian exist in copies of the Bible and religious prayers. Today, 15 million Hungarian speakers exist with the majority (about 10 million) living in Hungary.
