From eco-efficiency to sustainable production Maria Csutora Pietro Bertazzi The workshop is based on research done in the HU-0056 “Sustainable consumption, production and communication supported by a grant from Norway through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism

A major part of harmful emission in China serves American and European customers.  the ESI ( environmental sustainability index ) is positively correlated with ecological footprints. Countries with the best sustainability policies and highest ESI rankings ‘boast’ the largest ecological footprint.  While companies’ eco-efficiency improves, and progress is demonstrated in certain fields, they may even amplify their contribution to global unsustainability. Good sustainability policy gets along with bad sustainability performance

Szervezeti egység 6 Pitfalls of eco-efficiency principle  Rebound effect efficient use of resources generates more consumption  Problem of system boundaries What is waste and what is raw material, where is the border of economy and where begin ecosystems, etc.

Szervezeti egység Előadó neve Egyetemi prezentációs sablon 7 Recent escape strategies  Concentration on eco-efficiency rather than eco-effectiveness reduce the tons of GHGs per product and not in total  Passing impacts over to others through: – outsourcing –the supply chain (buy or make decisions, import from China, etc.) – compensation (short term win-win, long term lose-lose)

Szervezeti egység Előadó neve Egyetemi prezentációs sablon 8 Towards sustainable production and eco-effectiveness  Reduce environmental impact in absolute terms  Reduce environmental impact at global level  Stay within the limits of nature consider the stock of resources and natural capital

Szervezeti egység Előadó neve Egyetemi prezentációs sablon 9 Workshop questions:  Good examples for sustainable production strategies

Szervezeti egység Előadó neve Egyetemi prezentációs sablon 10 Workshop questions:  Can we approach sustainable production without limiting consumption? - Pooling - Sharing - Consumer’s Culture - Fashion could apprarently cut the GDP but could increase the standards of living
