Visible radiation passes through carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. After penetrating the Earth’s atmosphere, the radiation is absorbed and reflected by objects on the Earth’s surface. GREENHOUSE EFFECT II. The Earth radiates energy like the Sun, but because the temperature of the Earth’s surface is much lower then the temperature of the surface of the Sun, the type of radiation is mostly infrared. GREENHOUSE EFFECT III. Thus radiation comes freely through carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but it is prevented from escaping upon re-radiation by the Earth. The energy is trapped and the temperature of the atmosphere and the earth would obviously rise in significant amounts of carbon dioxide were to accumulate. GREENHOUSE EFFECT IV. There is geological evidence that only a few degrees temperature variation differentiates an ice age and our present situation. It seems clear, that in a time period in the order a half century, the greenhouse effect could produce temperature changes and a considerable climate changes.
