First of all, it improves home comfort by adapting the level of light to the users' requirements. We’ll see this in the examples that follow. Secondly, lowering the light threshold reduces energy consumption by the lighting circuit. And thirdly, it extends the lifetime of filament lamps by limiting inrush current and lowering the line voltage. The level of voltage is proportional to the requested setting level. The brighter the light, the higher the voltage is across the terminals of the lamp. The dimmer the light, the lower the voltage across the terminals. Plus, in professional environments, it can optimise working conditions by adjusting the lighting to fit the purpose.

Lights do not all have the same characteristics. Incandescent or 230 V halogen lights are ohmic electrical loads. 12 V halogen lights with ferromagnetic ballasts are inductive loads, whereas lights with electronic transformers are capacitive loads. Fluorescent tubes have other characteristics as well. And fluo-compact lights are not dimmable so far. These different characteristics call for different dimming techniques that are not compatible with each other. There are dimmers for each type of light, except for fluo-compact. Inappropriate use of a dimmer can damage it or damage the light, which is why it's important to make sure you check for compatibility when you make your choice. Professional dimmer sellers must ask their customers what type of load is being used and instruct them to use the same type of lights when they replace them!!!! Schneider Electric supplies a range of dimmers for the different types of lights, to keep in step with market prices and our customers' habits. We also have a Universal dimmer, compatible at the same time with incandescent lights, capacitive lights and inductive lights, which covers 80% of the lights used in homes. This avoids false moves when lights are replaced, which is the prime time for changing from an incandescent light to a halogen light, forgetting that there's a dimmer on the circuit. C +

It is considered that fluorescent tubes cannot be dimmed between 0 and 1 Volt. So 1 to 10 Volts must be used, i.e. 10% to 100% of the tube's lighting capacity. It is necessary to check the lighting power of the connected load and choose the dimmer accordingly. Several dimmer powers are available in the Schneider Electric range. The current use value for home applications is around 350 W and products such as those shown here are ideally suitable. For buildings, the lighting power can be up to more than 1000 Watts, in which case we recommend the use of control cabinet-mounted products of the TvO or TvBo type. These products allow for extended power. To continue with the technical choice, some dimmers call for a connected neutral and others do not. Those that do not require a connected neutral are more suitable for the renovation market. They avoid having to run an extra wire through conductor sleeves. And then there's the choice of design. This is important for end-users, particularly in homes, but also in high-end professional buildings where architecture is sensitive to design.

The term "advanced functions" refers first of all to a circular indication light around the rotary pusher which lights up in proportion to the brightness setting. As the lighting value is increased, more light segments go on around the pusher. The button has keys in the four corners. At the top left, a first brightness memory, at the top right, a second memory, at the bottom right, an energy saving function that limits the lighting to 80% of the maximum value. The two memories at the top have factory settings of about 25% for memory 1 and 50% for memory 2. These settings can be modified by the user. And at the bottom left, there is a key that is used to put the circular indicator light into pilot mode. Radio-frequency technology offers several advantages: - No or few wires to be run in the walls compared to a conventional installation, no more dust from cutting out grooves in the walls, and no plastering, painting or wall-papering to be redone! - Radio-frequency goes through walls and some floors. This means that control orders can be sent to another room. - In our RF offers, an emitter can control several receivers. Likewise, a receiver can be controlled by several different emitters. Based on this, scenes can be created. We'll see this in the next slide. Schneider Electric offers the Airlink system integrated in the Alvaïs and Unica ranges and the Connect system for the System M and Merten international ranges. Remote control, push-button receiver, socket receiver, ceiling receiver, just to mention a few of the features. There are specific training courses on these systems. At this stage, it is more or less recommended that these products be installed by professional electricians. IHC technology. This system, Schneider Electric's own, is dedicated to residential applications or small professional buildings. The system includes a central unit containing a processor that is programmed by software. Input-output modules are connected to the central unit. The input modules are used to connect standard components such as push-buttons, brightness sensors, presence detectors, gas detectors, and so on. The output modules are used to connect lighting circuits, shutter circuits, heating valve circuits, etc. The system is not limited to lighting circuits; it can be used to control the entire building. A software tool is used to programme all types of building operation: from simple lighting to the most complex scene. The IHC can manage everything in the home, including remote access by Internet and links with radio-frequency components. This is all covered by a special course on the IHC. However, you should be aware that the IHC was designed for electricians with some IT knowledge.

KNX technology. KNX is a field-bus dedicated to large professional building applications. It is also found in high-end residential buildings. Here, the components have "KNX intelligence" inside, enabling them to communicate. KNX is a European communication standard. This means that it is a so-called "open" system and each manufacturer can propose products communicating according to the KNX standard. KNX is a bus to which a very large number of products communicating over considerable distances can be connected, strengthening its use in large buildings. And KNX provides energy savings thanks to intelligent management of the switching on and off of lights in the building according to the use of spaces, and the management of heating and shutters. There are different parts to KNX: - First, sales: KNX is sold by project, so to sell it, you need to consult specifiers and people who tender, such as "large contractors". - Secondly, hardware installation: this can be done by contractors or electricians specialised in professional buildings. - And programming: this calls for particular knowledge of the software and products installed.
